My background

My first computer was a Sinclair ZX81. The first program I wrote put "2+2=3" up on screen. Garbage in, garbage out.
My first computer job was for a company importing kitchen furniture from the factory in France. The software (running on ICL DRS machines) had been tailor made and needed configuring, testing and implementing.

I oversaw the whole project.

Next I was involved in selling one of the first Computer Aided Kitchen Design systems called Planit. It is now the market leader in a mature market. How many kitchen designs do you see nowadays drawn by hand? I sold several hundred systems starting on the Apple Lisa, then the original Mac Plus. The whole system ran on a machine with no hard disk, and one 400k floppy.

When I got my first 5Mb hard disk, I thought I would never fill it.

The biggest problem was that I kept installing computers to do one job and one job only. It was like selling a car that would only do the journey to Sainsburys (and back, hopefully). So I took a deep breath and approached some of the people I had sold systems to, and asked them if they wanted their computers networked together, whether they wanted to run accounts or customer databases. And it all snowballed from there.

My clients have ranged from the traditional Mac areas of graphic designers, interior designers and PR companies through Kitchen and Bathroom designers and wholesalers, Church Organ Builders, Chemical traders, academic publishers, Shopfitters, printers, colleges, a radio 4 presenter, a barrister, a holiday company, a dance company, an architect, charities dealing with Student Volunteering, Family Rights, Music in Schools, Lesbian and Gay Christians,
And before that?

I have an MA in Archaeology from Cambridge University, which is more relevant than it sounds at first.
I worked in a builders merchants (so I know about stock control), managed a kitchen showroom (so I know about domestic sales), managed a couple of Clarks shoe shops (so I know about being on the receiving end of Head Office computers).

I worked in an insurance underwriters copying information from hand-written forms to computer import forms (remember punch cards? Yes, I'm that old)
